What healthy looks like

Green Flags

Spotting red flags is only half the picture. These are the signs of someone who can build a safe, steady, respectful relationship.

Accountability

They own their mistakes instead of blaming you, their exes, or the world.

What it looks like

  • "You're right, I dropped the ball. Here's how I'll fix it."
  • Talks about past relationships fairly, including their own part

The red-flag opposite: Every problem is someone else's fault

Consistency

Their words and actions match — on good days and bad days, in private and in public.

What it looks like

  • Shows up when they say they will
  • Treats waiters, family, and strangers the same way they treat you

The red-flag opposite: Hot-and-cold swings, or a charming public face that disappears at home

Respect for boundaries

They hear "no" or "not yet" without pressure, sulking, or punishment.

What it looks like

  • Lets you keep your friends, hobbies, and time alone
  • Asks before assuming — about money, sex, or your plans

The red-flag opposite: Guilt-tripping, checking your phone, or isolating you

Emotional regulation

They feel big emotions but handle them without exploding, punishing, or shutting you out.

What it looks like

  • Says "I need a few minutes" and comes back to talk
  • Disagreements stay about the issue, not attacks on you

The red-flag opposite: Rage, silent treatment, or threats when upset

Ability to apologize

A real apology names what happened, shows understanding, and comes with changed behavior.

What it looks like

  • "I'm sorry I raised my voice. That wasn't fair to you."
  • The same hurt doesn't keep repeating

The red-flag opposite: "I'm sorry you feel that way" — or apologies with no change

Empathy

They care how you feel, even when it's inconvenient for them.

What it looks like

  • Notices when you're having a hard day and asks about it
  • Celebrates your wins without competing

The red-flag opposite: Conversations always circle back to them

Green Flags Checklist

Think of one person. Tick each green flag you've seen from them consistently — over months, not just the first few dates.

Nobody is perfect

Healthy people still have bad days. The difference is the pattern: they repair, learn, and keep treating you with respect over time. Look for green flags that hold steady for months, not just the first few dates.
