Dating Red Flags

Chemistry can hide patterns. Cluster B patterns cause the most heartbreak in dating, so they come first. Watch behavior over time — not words.

The universal rule

Slow down. Patterns reveal themselves in 3–6 months: how they handle "no," criticism, stress, and people who can't do anything for them.

Antisocial Cluster B

Pattern: Charm → exploitation → discard. Rules apply to everyone but them.

  • Small lies that don't add up — job, past, money
  • Charming at first, then cold when you say no
  • Borrows money and never repays
  • Blames exes for everything, shows no remorse
  • Cruelty to animals, waiters, or 'weaker' people

Protect yourself: Verify their story. Never mix finances early. Any violence or threats: leave and get help.

Borderline Cluster B

Pattern: Idealize → devalue → fear of abandonment → reconcile. Repeat.

  • Intense 'soulmate' talk within days
  • Panic or rage when you need space
  • Mood swings from adoring to hostile
  • Threats of self-harm when you try to leave

Protect yourself: Slow the pace. Keep your own friends. Self-harm threats need professional help — call 988 — not your sacrifice.

Histrionic Cluster B

Pattern: Exciting at first, exhausting over time.

  • Every event becomes a drama about them
  • Flirts openly to provoke you
  • Emotions are big but shallow and shift quickly

Protect yourself: Notice whether you're a partner or an audience.

Narcissistic Cluster B

Pattern: Love-bomb → devalue → discard → 'hoover' back.

  • Love-bombing: over-the-top gifts and praise early on
  • Conversations always circle back to them
  • Rage or silent treatment after mild criticism
  • Rewrites history — 'that never happened' (gaslighting)
  • All their exes are 'crazy'

Protect yourself: Watch how they treat people who can't help them. Trust patterns over promises. Consider no-contact after leaving.

Paranoid Cluster A

Pattern: Jealousy and accusation that no amount of reassurance can fix.

  • Checks your phone or accuses you of cheating with no reason
  • Interrogates you about where you were
  • Treats innocent jokes as attacks
  • Brings up old grievances again and again

Protect yourself: You cannot prove your innocence enough. If trust never builds after months, step back.

Schizoid Cluster A

Pattern: Not cruel, but distant — you may feel lonely inside the relationship.

  • Emotionally flat even on special occasions
  • Shows little interest in physical or emotional closeness
  • Rarely initiates contact

Protect yourself: Don't expect to 'warm them up.' Decide if limited closeness meets your needs.

Schizotypal Cluster A

Pattern: Confusing communication and growing isolation as a couple.

  • Makes big decisions based on 'signs' or magical thinking
  • Strong social anxiety that doesn't ease with familiarity
  • Suspicious of your friends

Protect yourself: Watch whether their beliefs start dictating your life choices.

Avoidant Cluster C

Pattern: Wants closeness but pulls away — not out of malice, out of fear.

  • Cancels plans out of anxiety
  • Won't meet your friends or family
  • Shuts down at gentle feedback

Protect yourself: Patience helps, but they must work on it themselves, ideally with therapy.

Dependent Cluster C

Pattern: You become caretaker; resentment builds on both sides.

  • Jumped into this relationship right after the last one
  • Can't make simple choices without you
  • Agrees with everything, never states a preference

Protect yourself: Encourage independence rather than doing everything for them.

Obsessive-Compulsive Cluster C

Pattern: Control and criticism dressed up as 'high standards.'

  • Controls how you load the dishwasher, spend, or schedule
  • Work always comes before you
  • Can't admit being wrong

Protect yourself: Notice whether you feel constantly corrected. Your way is allowed to exist.
