Many people know exactly what a bad relationship feels like, but aren't sure what a healthy one looks like. This checklist describes it in everyday terms.
No relationship ticks every box every day. Look for what's true most of the time.
Trust and safety
- I feel safe being honest, even about hard things.
- I'm not afraid of how they'll react.
- I don't feel the need to check up on them — and they don't check up on me.
- They keep their word in small things as well as big ones.
Respect and boundaries
- They accept "no" without pressure or punishment.
- I keep my friends, family, and hobbies.
- Money, intimacy, and big decisions are discussed, not imposed.
- They treat other people with respect, not just me.
Conflict and repair
- We can disagree without insults, threats, or silent treatment.
- They take responsibility when they're wrong.
- Apologies come with real change.
- Problems get solved, not just buried.
Support and growth
- They celebrate my wins.
- They support my goals, even when it costs them something.
- I feel more like myself in this relationship, not less.
Healthy doesn't mean perfect. It means safe, respectful, and repaired when things go wrong.
