Am I Dating a Narcissist? Narcissist Warning Signs in a Partner

Only a qualified professional can diagnose Narcissistic Personality Disorder. But you don't need a diagnosis to notice a pattern of behavior that hurts you.

Many people have some narcissistic traits. What matters is whether the behavior is persistent, inflexible, and damaging to the relationship.

Warning signs to notice

  • Conversations almost always come back to them.
  • They expect special treatment and get angry when they don't receive it.
  • Little genuine interest in your feelings, especially when you're struggling.
  • Rage, sulking, or the silent treatment after even mild criticism.
  • They rarely apologize — or apologize without changing.
  • Charming in public, cold or cruel in private.
  • They rewrite events so you doubt your own memory (gaslighting).
  • Your successes are ignored, minimized, or turned into competition.

Confidence vs. narcissism

Confident people can celebrate others, admit mistakes, and handle feedback. Narcissistic patterns tend to need constant admiration and treat other people's needs as an inconvenience. Confidence lifts the room; narcissism needs the room to revolve around them.

What you can do

  • Keep notes of specific incidents so you can trust your memory.
  • Set one clear boundary and watch the response.
  • Stay connected with friends and family.
  • Consider talking to a therapist who understands narcissistic abuse.

Ask less "Are they a narcissist?" and more "How do they treat me, consistently, over time?"
